A new South Side barbecue joint opened late last month, and it’s already selling out. Owner and pitmaster Adrian Davila opened Double A BBQ on the same property as the highly acclaimed Carnitas Lonja and its sister restaurant, Fish Lonja, on Roosevelt just south of Interstate 10.

Davila, who is not related to cookbook author and frequent Food Network guest Adrian Davila of Davila’s BBQ in Seguin, smokes his meats over pecan, oak and mesquite woods. His menu offers Texas classics like brisket, turkey breast and pulled pork, as well as pork and beef ribs — with a Tex-Mex twist.

He offers a taco flight ($13) that includes sausage, smoked turkey and pulled pork tacos, with an array of housemade sides and sauces, served on flour tortillas from San Antonio’s Del Rio Tortilla Factory.

“As somebody who grew up on the South Side, I want to serve the food that I grew up eating,” Davila said. “When you think of San Antonio, you think of tacos, and adding the

barbecue element is something that I believe makes us just a little bit different.”

Davila previously sold new homes before entering the

business. He honed his barbecue skills by learning from area pitmasters and online seminars, but he was hardly new to cooking.

“I have been cooking all of my life, and as the second oldest of eight kids, I grew up in an environment where large family get-together funcbarbecue tions were a regular thing, and we had to feed everybody,” he said.

Other menu items include the D.A.B. Mac Attack ($16), a sandwich with sliced beef rib, mac and cheese, barbecue sauce, pickles and onions; and the Double A Nachos ($12), which come with tortilla chips topped with queso, refried beans, pico de gallo and a choice of meats.

There’s also traditional sides, such as potato salad and coleslaw, but also a loaded creamed corn ($8) that is smoked and topped with slaw, cotija cheese, onions and chopped brisket.

For now, Double A is weekend business, but Davila expects to expand the hours soon.

“The response to our opening was overwhelming, and we just have to keep it up and do the best we can,” Davila said.
