Palacios leads Jags to rout of Volunteers

- By Taylore Gills

Johnson sophomore Camila Palacios scored two goals as the Jaguars defeated LEE 4-0 on Friday at Comalander Stadium.

The Jaguars (15-4-2, 13-1-1 District 28-6A) were in control throughout, and Palacios said her teammates expected nothing less from themselves.

“We wanted to blow this team out,” Palacios said. “We just wanted to win.”

It took awhile to make that a reality. In the 36th minute, Palacios broke a scoreless tie.

Pressured by two Volunteers in the box, she squeezed a goal into the net to put the Jaguars up 1-0 at the half.

Johnson coach Scott Stone said he attributed his team's success to utilizing

his bench players more, applying defensive pressure and playing with unwavering intensity.

“We tried to play wide a little bit more, but also just kept the intensity up,”

Stone said. “It was all about just cranking the intensity up, keeping them under pressure, and we knew eventually their legs would wear out.”

The Jaguars turned up

the heat in the second half, with Kelly Franks scoring in the 42nd minute and Palacios adding another in the 50th minute.

Johnson junior Mabry Williams, an ExpressNews Player of the Week earlier this season, scored a final goal in the 78th minute.

It was a physical match,

with both teams attacking the ball on both ends of the field. There were multiple foul calls, collisions and tackles.

The Jaguars were prepared to play tough against the Volunteers, aware of their aggressiveness and solid defense, Palacios said.

Jefferson will look to

stay atop the district as it heads into its final match of the regular season against Madison at 12 p.m. Tuesday.

“We knew this was a very physical team, so we wanted to body up and not get pushed around,” Palacios said. “I think we did a good job with that. We didn't let up.”
