II, M.D., age 70, of San Antonio died, Wednesday, March 15, 2023, from complications of prostate cancer. Born
April 17, 1952, in San Antonio and named after his paternal grandfather, he was the fourth child of John Thomas Steen Sr. and Nell Donnell Steen. After graduating from
San Antonio Academy in 1966 and Alamo Heights High School in 1970, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 from Stanford University where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He enrolled in medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1978. In 1979 he completed his firstyear residency in general surgery at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas followed by residency training in anesthesiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center from 1979 to 1982. practiced as a boardcertified anesthesiologist predominantly focusing on neurosurgery and spinal reconstruction surgery and serving for a time as chief of anesthesiology of the HCA Medical Center of Plano. He was honored to be named a diplomate by the American Board of Anesthesiology. After a 34-year career in medicine, he retired in 2012. He resided in University Park in Dallas until last year when he returned to live in his hometown where he was a member of the Argyle and the Order of the Alamo as well as a past member of the San Antonio Country Club and the San Antonio German Club. Throughout his adult life he was an avid, competitive bridge player. Dr. Steen was preceded in death by his parents; older sister, Nancy Nell Steen Boyce; younger brother, Stewart James Steen; and brother-in-law, John Wells Fainter Jr. He is survived by his older sister, Susan Margaret Steen Fainter, of Austin; older brother,
John T. Steen Jr., and his wife, Ida Louise Clement Steen; as well as brotherin-law, John Kirkpatrick Boyce III, and his wife, Vicki Goodman Boyce, all of San Antonio. He leaves behind seven nieces and nephews: Mary Nell Boone, M.D., of Houston; Laura Nell Soules Burton and her husband, Jesse Byron Burton III, of San Antonio; Jennifer Susan Boone Sappington and her husband, Brad Keith Sappington, of Austin; Olivia Leighton Stinnett Boyce of Dallas; John T. Steen III and his wife, Mary Josephine Barnwell Steen; Ida Louise Larkin Steen Gaunt and her husband, William Hartley Gaunt; and James Higbie Clement Steen, and his wife, Natalie Ann Mencio Steen, all of Houston. He also leaves 15 great-nieces and great-nephews as well as his lifelong close friends, Nancy Marchbanks Steves and Edward Galt Steves. The family is grateful to Dr. Steen’s hospice caregivers, particularly George Robles. Private interment
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, San Antonio Academy or a charity of one’s choice.
