Pouring in nearly 50 points and setting a school record while leading your team to a victory is a great week, and it got a little better for South San senior Ruben Hernandez when he was voted Express-News Athlete of the Week.

Hernandez set a new school mark by making 13 3-pointers against Eagle Pass Winn, and he finished with 47 points in the 92-65 win over Eagle Pass Winn last week, a performanc­e which earned him boys basketball player of the week honors Monday.

South San fans took it from there, casting 208 votes to help him win the Athlete of the Week poll over five other finalists.

Boerne Champion’s Elizabeth Leachman set a national record in the girls 3,200 meters with a time of 9 minutes, 45.57 seconds at the Northside ISD track meet. She was named girls track and field athlete of the week.

Reagan senior Samuel Abati, a Texas commit, cleared 17 feet, 1 inch to win the pole vault by more than three feet at the North East 8 meet, earning boys track and field athlete of the week honors.

Lytle senior Calyssa Sevier became the third girls player from the Greater San Antonio area to reach 3,000 career points. She totaled 64 points, 19 rebounds, 17 assists and 18 steals in wins over Dilley and Hondo.

Harlan junior Greydyn Richards, the boys soccer player of the week, scored all three goals in a 3-0 win against Sotomayor, and

Taft senior Layla Rangel accounted for nine of the Raiders’ 11 goals last week. Rangel had two goals and four assists in a 7-0 win against Stevens and one goal and two assists in a 4-1 win against Sotomayor. She was named girls soccer player of the week.
