Helen Moss Miles
July 24, 1929 - January 22, 2024
Helen Moss Miles, age 94, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. She was the oldest child of Carl Moss and Loleat Moss. Helen grew up in Oxford, Texas and graduated as valedictorian from Llano High School. She later went on to obtain her journalism degree from The University of Texas at Austin. After graduating, she returned to Llano and worked at the Llano County News. Later, when she was writing for the Williamson County Sun in Georgetown, she met her first husband, Edgar. They were married from 1950 until his death in 1975. Later, she was married to Blackie Dalberg from 1989 until his death in 1997.
She was an editor for the Journal of Texas Medical Association, the San Antonio Express and News, the San Antonio Light, and the North San Antonio Times. For the San Antonio papers, she edited the food, society,
and real estate sections.
While journalism was her career, the family ranch in Llano County was in her heart. She was in constant touch with the day-to-day cattle operations, deer hunting, roads, fences, wells, and innovations. The Lower Colorado River Authority honored her as the first participant in a 1990 pilot study that evolved into the LCRA Creekside Conservation Programs.
Helen had other interests. She had a deeprooted love for music. She studied piano when she was young and could play her pieces throughout her life. Worshiping at First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio was important to her. She enjoyed Bible study classes and even led a study circle.
She was preceded in death by her parents Carl (Carlos Smith) Moss & Loleat Ligon Moss; first husband, Edgar Martin Miles; second husband,
Hugh Black Dahlberg; and brother, Ligon
Moss. Helen is survived by her two daughters, Marsha Anne Roberts (John) & Beverly Carol Beheim; grandchildren, Christopher Spinner, Ben Solomon (Lesley), Erin Cavazos (Omar), Audrey Salmon (Gavin), Richard Spinner (Geri), Erika Cunningham (Dan), & Karl Beheim (Alora); greatgrandchildren, Ryan, Lily & Clara Spinner, Lexi & Austin Spinner, Michael & David Cavazos, Tobias & Beau Salmon, and Emil & Alan Cunningham.
