Charles Raiford Foster Jr., a beloved member of the San Antonio community, passed away on March 17, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on July 7, 1932, in San Antonio, Raiford led a remarkable life filled with service, dedication, and love.

After graduating from Alamo Heights High School in 1950, Raiford attended Tarleton State College. He enlisted in the Navy during the Korean conflict, where his commitment to duty led him to serve for 20 years, ultimately retiring as a Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman. Notably, he was selected to serve on the staff of Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Throughout his naval career, he served aboard various ships and stations, including the

Raiford enjoyed a second career as an Orthopedic Physician Assistant at Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. During this time, he also served as the Vice President of the Virginia Associatio­n of Orthopedic Physician Assistants.

Retiring after another 20 years of service, he and his wife returned to San Antonio, where he became deeply involved in his community. He served as Junior and Senior Warden and was a member of the Vestry at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Raiford volunteere­d with the “Our Lord’s Table” ministry, served as an usher, and as a Eucharisti­c Minister. Additional­ly, he dedicated

his time as a docent at the San Antonio Botanical Garden and was an active member of the Feral Cat Coalition.

Beyond his profession­al and community endeavors, Raiford cherished spending time with his family, traveling, and indulging in his passion for gardening. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Elizabeth L. Foster, his children Harry, James, and Susan, his daughters-in-law Bonnie, Jeanne, Ellen, and Carla, 7 grandchild­ren and their spouses, 13 great-grandchild­ren, and five beloved cats. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles R. Foster III, and sister Ann Landtroop.

A memorial service in honor of Raiford will be held at 10 AM on April 12, 2024, at St. Paul’s

Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas, followed by a burial with military honors at 1:45 PM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Raiford will be remembered fondly for his unwavering commitment to his country, community, and most importantl­y, his family.

Memorial contributi­ons may be made to Our Lord’s Table Neighborho­od Food Pantry at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and to the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition.
