Col. Jerry Eugene Marshall

Colonel Jerry Eugene Marshall, age 90, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. He is a native Texan who grew up in Huntsville, Texas, graduating from Huntsville High School where he played football. He attended Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas, Southern Methodist University and was a graduate of University of Nebraska in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He also obtain an additional Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State University in 1964 and continued graduate work in management at the University of Arizona. Jerry joined the U.S Air Force in 1955, commissioned through the Aviation Cadet Program receiving pilot training. His first 8 years of military service were spent on world-wide missions for the Strategic Air Command and Military Air Transport Service spending considerable time in Laos, Thailand, South Vietnam, India and Japan. A veteran of 120 combat missions over Southeast Asia as a command pilot, accumulating 800 combat hours and more than 5,000 military flying hours. He also served as an assistant professor of aerospace studies with the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Arizona. While at UA, he was the Advisor the ROTC Angel Flight Squadron. He served 2 years as a pilot in Vietnam starting in 1968. He moved on to the Pentagon with the Defense Intelligence Agency, then to Hawaii as Director of Intelligence with CINPAC (Commander in Chief, Pacific Command), then back to the Pentagon as the Air Staff Division Chief, Headquarters USAF. He finished his Air Force career at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas as the Commander of the Air Force Electronic Warfare Center and Commander of the Air Force Cryptologic Support Center. He was highly decorated throughout his career with numerous awards. Most notable are two Legion of Merit Awards, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and Bronze Star Medal. He retired from the Air Force as a full Colonel in March of 1985 where he stepped into the role of Executive Director of the Bexar Metro 9-1-1 Network District creating the first 9-1-1 operation for San Antoinio and surrounding counties. This 9-1-1 framework was used as a template for the creation of other districts across the State of Texas. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from Sam Houston State University in 2009 and the Distinguished Service Award from Schriener University in 2011. He held many civic board positions and was an active member in the Rotary Club of San Antonio (Downtown), Sons of the American Revolution and the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
While Jerry had a successful career of service in both the military and civilian life, a mentor to so many, his true focus was on his family, faith and community. He cherished his extended family, his loving wife, Ann Day Marshall of Madisonville, Texas, his 2 daughters, Kathryn Covert and Laura (and Keith) Fowler, and he was so proud of his 6 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He had a passion for education, providing opportunities for so many individuals to obtain access to higher education. He was a man of honor, faith and service with a strong, positive, “can-do” spirit. He was an avid letter writer and practical joker with a serious sweet tooth. He taught his family to look on the bright side, practice unconditional love and always remember to keep a sense of humor no matter the circumstances. He loved his recent community, Blue Skies/Air Force Village where he served in several leadership roles and developed many dear friendships. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60, Margaret Ann Day Marshall, his parents, Gerald V Marshall, Virginia Smither King and J. Robert King II and his brother, J. Robert King
III. Jerry is survived by his sister Kay King Mitchell of Huntsville, Texas, his daughters, Kathryn Covert of Dallas, Texas and Laura Fowler (Keith) of Breckenridge, Colorado; as well as six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
The family will receive guests from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024, at Porter
Loring Mortuary.
Pastor Dan Figueroa will officiate. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rotary Club of San Antonio Youth Education.
