Marlins clinch postseason berth

NEW YORK — The Miami Marlins clinched an improbable playoff berth in their coronaviru­s-decimated season, beating the New York Yankees 4-3 in 10 innings Friday night to seal a postseason trip on the field of the team that Miami CEO Derek Jeter and manager Don Mattingly once captained.

Miami earned its first postseason trip since 2003 when it won the World Series as the Florida Marlins.

The Marlins, 57-105 last year, became the first team to make the playoffs in the year following a 100-loss season.

CARDINALS SPLIT WITH BREWERS: Daniel Ponce de Leon pitched one-hit ball over six innings and host St. Louis beat Milwaukee 9-1 to split a doublehead­er. Christian Yelich homered as the Brewers took the opener 3-0.

CUBS10, WHITE SOX 0: Yu Darvish pitched seven strong innings for his NL-leading eighth win, Willson Contreras homered twice and the Cubs reduced their magic number for securing the division crown to one game.

BRAVES 8, RED SOX 7 (11): Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer to lead off the 11th inning and host Atlanta clinched the No. 2 seed in the National League playoffs.

RAYS 6, PHILLIES 4: Joey Wendle had a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning and AL East champion Tampa Bay won at home.

GIANTS 5, PADRES 4: Wilmer Flores hit a go-ahead homer and host San Francisco edged San Diego in the first game of a doublehead­er. The Padres clinched home-field advantage for the wild-card round with the Cardinals’ loss.

INDIANS 4, PIRATES 3: Cesar Hernandez’s RBI double with two outs in the ninth inning helped host Cleveland rally for its third walk-off win in four days.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 4, ROCKIES 0: Zac Gallen had a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings and host Arizona blanked Colorado in the first game of a doublehead­er. The loss eliminated the Rockies from playoff contention.

BLUE JAYS10, ORIOLES 5: Randal Grichuk and Travis Shaw homered and Toronto beat Baltimore at Buffalo, N.Y.
