Baylor pauses football

- STEPHEN WHITAKER

Baylor has shut down football activities to evaluate recent positive tests for COVID-19 but still hopes to host Oklahoma State next week, the school said Thursday.

Baylor reported 10 new cases among athletes across all sports in its most recent update Monday. The school said it had 10 active cases, including six with people experiencing symptoms.

The school said 18 cases are being monitored, including close contacts. Baylor said contact tracing was another reason for the latest football shutdown.

The Bears already have had two games called off over coronavirus issues. Their original opener against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 12 didn’t happen because the Bulldogs had widespread positive tests for COVID-19, and a hastily arranged game against former Southwest Conference foe Houston was canceled a day before it was supposed to be played Sept. 19.

Elsewhere: Kansas coach Les Miles tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday and is quarantining in his home, where he plans to fulfill his head coaching responsibilities remotely as the Jayhawks spend a week off before visiting West Virginia . ... New coach Karl Dorrell and Colorado will kick off fall camp today, a day after getting approval from local health officials . ... Florida Atlantic’s game at Southern Mississippi on Saturday has been postponed because COVID-19 issues. The schools said they’ll work with Conference USA to reschedule.

Quick take: The 15th installment of the Highway 151 showdown between Warren and Stevens got off to a slow start but Stevens provided plenty of fireworks, scoring 45 unanswered points against its rivals from less than three miles down the highway and picking up the 45-14 win.

Warriors quarterback Vaughn Martinez then put the Warriors up by two scores when he turned a broken play into an 11-yard touchdown run. Both teams were able to take advantage of turnovers early. Warren’s first touchdown was set up by a Stevens muffed punt near the end of the first quarter.

Stevens’ second touchdown of the night came off of a fumble by Martinez. In the second half, the Falcons feasted on Warrior turnovers. Warren lost three fumbles after halftime, and it resulted in 14 points for Stevens. The Falcons tied the score at 14 on a 43-yard touchdown pass from K.K. Brashears to Jeremiah Mestre-elliott. Stevens’ best touchdown of the night was an 85-yard scoop and score by Jaden Lopez in the third quarter
