Johnson continued its domination of the LEE Volunteers with a 42-7 victory at Comalander Stadium on Friday night. The Jaguars took advantage of two early turnovers by LEE to put the game out of reach before the first quarter ended. LEE ended up scoring late to avoid the shutout.

Highlights:

The first quarter belonged to Johnson. After ElAmin Bawa recovered a LEE fumble at the Volunteers’ 15yard line, Jaguars running back Matthew Rodriguez capped off a short drive with a sweep from 2 yards out at the 10:44 mark of the first quarter. LEE turned it over on its next drive. This time, it was Reid Watt who intercepte­d the Volunteer pass at the Lee 15. Johnson added its second touchdown of the quarter on a 3-yard pass from Ty Reasoner to Benjamin McCreary. Reasoner threw a third touchdown in the first quarter on a 9-yard pass to Canaan Fairley. Johnson added to its advantage just before halftime when Reasoner connected with Jeremiah Shelton for a 24-yard score at 2:35 mark of the second quarter. Johnson outgained LEE 278-106 in the first half. The Jaguars were threatenin­g to score another touchdown in the final minute of the half before LEE defensive back Robert Muniz intercepte­d a Reasoner pass in the end zone.

The Jaguars added an insurance touchdown on their first drive of the third quarter when

McCreary broke off a 57-yard run for a score. After that both teams put the second string into the game. Johnson’s second string added the final touchdown when Spencer Hawthorne tossed a 7-yard pass to Cruz Kirwan with 4:25 to play in the third. Johnson was driving for another score in the fourth quarter when Hawthorne’s pass was intercepte­d by Diego Ponce. LEE took advantage of the rare good fortune and scored its lone touchdown when Jeremias Luna Calderon connected with Carson Callendar for a 17-yard score. What it means: LEE won the first meeting back in 2008, but Johnson has now won 12 in a row against the Volunteers. Johnson improved to 2-0 in 2020 and 1-0 in district 28-6A. The Jaguars are now 76-59 alltime. LEE falls to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in district. The Volunteers’ all-time record dropped to 306-343-8 with the loss.

Game balls: Johnson’s Reasoner completed 11 of his 27 pass attempts for 203 yards and two touchdowns. McCreary finished with 108 yards rushing on 10 carries. Shane Johnson led the Jaguar receivers with three catches for 73 yards.

Up next: Johnson hosts MacArthur at 7:30 p.m., Friday night at Comalander Stadium. LEE returns to action at 7 p.m. next Saturday when it faces Roosevelt at Heroes Stadium.
