A Texas State football player was shot and killed during a botched drug deal, San Marcos police said Wednesday.

Enalisa Briana Blackman and Michael Tyreek Ifeanacho, both 20, have been charged with capital murder in the death of 20year-old Khambrail Winters, officials said.

About 9 p.m. Tuesday, police found Winters with a gunshot wound to the chest at the Lodge Apartments after receiving reports of gunfire at the complex at 1975 Aquarena Springs Drive.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Winters died at the scene.

Witnesses told police that Winters was with Blackman and Ifeanacho at the complex to buy marijuana. Police said Winters was shot during the deal but did not say who pulled the trigger.

Blackman and Ifeanacho were charged because of their involvement in the incident. In Texas, an individual can be charged with capital murder for their involvement in a crime that results in death

Police are trying to identify two other individuals involved in the shooting and are attempting to locate additional witnesses.

Winters was a defensive back in his sophomore year at Texas State.

He earned an All-sun Belt Conference honorable mention as a freshman last season after starting nine games at defensive back and making 52 tackles.

He didn’t play during the 2020 season because he tore a ligament during training camp.

“We will stand together as a team and support one another during this very difficult time. Our thoughts and condolences are with Khambrail’s family and loved ones,” Texas State football coach Jake Spavital said, adding that the team is “deeply saddened” by the death.

Winters’ teammates expressed their disbelief over his death in social media posts that included the hashtag #LongLive1, which represents his number.

Before joining Texas State, Winters was an athlete at Alief Taylor High School in the Houston area.

Investigators are asking for any surveillance video of the area around the shooting or in the parking lot near Building 4 of the complex. The apartment’s surveillance video was not working, officials said.

Anyone with surveillance video or information is asked to call 512-753-2317 or email btempleton@sanmarcostx.gov.

This is the third homicide investigation in San Marcos this year.
