Corpus Christi Miller 70, Boerne 45

- JIM MARTINEZ

Quick take: Boerne came up just shy of its preseason goal of playing into December. Standing in its way was an offensive machine that churned out 597 yards of total offense and lit up the scoreboard. Corpus Christi Miller ended the Greyhounds run with a 70-45 win in the Class 4A Region IV semifinals Friday night at the Alamodome.

It was only the third thirdround appearance for the Greyhounds in school history.

Miller, which played in Class 5A last season, moves on to play Austin LBJ in the state quarterfinals next weekend. Highlights: Boerne put up impressive numbers on the Buccaneers’ defense with quarterback Rashawn Galloway passing for 341 yards. The Greyhounds were forced to the air early after falling behind 21-0.

The Buccaneers’ offense started early with Ethan Greenwood picking up 16 yards through the middle of Boerne’s defense. Another quick Greenwood handoff came before a pair of of 18-yard strikes from Andrew Body to Lonnie Adkism and Adraen Lloyd before Greenwood finished off the drive with a 1-yard plunge.

The Greyhounds’ offense was turned away on their first possession after three plays before giving the ball back to Miller at its own 26-yard line after a punt.

The Bucs offense continued to eat up yards at a blistering pace, rushing to the line after every play. Miller’s quick-strike offense marched down the field behind the their second running back of the game, McCullion Williams, and Body, who carried the Bucs offense for 12 plays before finding Greenwood for a 12-yard pass to give Miller a 14-0 lead with 4:37 left in the opening quarter.

Once again, the Greyhounds failed to move the ball against Miller’s hard-charging defense, giving up the ball to Miller’s offense before the end of the first. A few Williams runs preceded a 37-yard pass from Body to Jackson Graves. Another Graves reception moved the Bucs deep into Greyhounds territory. Six rushing plays later, Body scored on a 1-yard run behind the left side of his offensive line.

Boerne’s third drive finally provided a spark, when on the second play, Galloway found Cam Johnson behind Miller’s defense for a 70-yard pass. Johnson nearly dragged a Bucs defender into the end zone before stopping just shy of the goal line. Galloway got the first points for the Greyhounds on the next play when he snuck in for a 1yard scoring run.

Miller’s offense was quick to answer. The Bucs needed only six plays, including 19- and 33yard catches from Lloyd that set up Greenwood’s third score of the first half. The sophomore running back sprinted again through the center of Boerne’s defense for a 15-yard touchdown run.

The Greyhounds defense came up with a turnover midway

through the second quarter when Tanner McCarter wrestled the ball away from Williams. The next play, Galloway found Scott Hettie along on the left sideline for a 28-yard scoring pass to cut Boerne’s deficit to 28-14.

The Greyhounds defense again came up big, stopping Miller on downs after the Bucs’ offense was given great field position after a failed onside kick.

But Boerne’s offense failed to move the ball against Miller and gave the ball back to Miller’s offense, which went to work at its own 36-yard line. Body, the Bucs’ senior quarterback, was able to direct his offense down the field before finding Donovan Terrell for a 20-yard touchdown pass with under two minutes remaining in the half. as Greenwood found the end zone again to cap a 54-yard drive. The score gave Miller a 49-27 lead.

Boerne scored at the end of the third quarter when Hettie caught his second touchdown pass. This one from 26-yards out.

The Bucs’ ran away in the fourth quarter.

Williams got in on the scoring with a 1-yard run, which Body followed up with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Adkism to get Miller to the 70-point mark in the game.

Game Balls: Body moved into fourth place in the states career passing yards list with his 432yard performance.

Galloway passed for 341 for the Greyounds. Cam Johnson led Boerne’s receivers with 104 yards on 4 receptions.

Up next: Miller (9-4) moves on to play Austin LBJ Saturday at Farris Stadium.
