Man accused of firing at officer faces attempted murder charge
A San Antonio man who is alleged to have emptied his firearm of ammunition as he shot at a pursuing officer has been indicted on a charge of attempted capital murder of a police officer.
Adrian Octavio Cardenas was among those charged in nearly 340 separate felony indictments handed up this week by two Bexar County grand juries.
Cardenas, 22, is accused of shooting at Police Officer Arturo Ozuna on Oct. 5.
The incident occurred when two officers attempted to stop a vehicle at 6:15 p.m. that day near Southwest Military Drive and Logwood Avenue on the Southwest Side.
Cardenas, one of three passengers in the vehicle, got out and ran, and an officer gave chase.
Police said that as Cardenas reached the driveway of a home on Grosvenor Street near Logwood, he turned and began shooting at the pursuing officer.
Police Chief William McManus said at the time that Cardenas ran out of bullets, pulled out a second gun and continued to fire at the officer. A round struck a body camera the officer was wearing strapped to his chest.
The officer returned fire, hitting Cardenas in the arm and abdomen. He was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries.
“We are extremely lucky not to have a dead officer this evening,” McManus said at the scene.
At the time of his arrest, Cardenas was wanted on two warrants on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault with bodily injurymarried.
He could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. His case is
before Judge Velia Meza in 226th District Court.
Also indicted this week was Mariana Campos-Jimenez, 21.
She’s charged with intoxication manslaughter in the wrong-way driving death of Gabriel Gallegos on May 23. Her case is before Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl in 175th District Court.
Campos-Jimenez, who is out on bond, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the second-degree felony.
Separately, Davian Loredo is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony. Five separate indictments allege Loredo, 22, shot at or in the direction of five people on Aug. 18. His cases also are before Torres-Stahl.
He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
