Barcello leads BYU upset of San Diego State

SAN DIEGO — Alex Barcello scored 22 points and Brandon Averette hit a huge 3-pointer with 51 seconds left for BYU, which blew a 17-point lead before beating No. 18 San Diego State 72-62 on Friday despite Matt Mitchell’s career-high 35 points.

Mitchell was remarkable in scoring 26 points in the second half. He spurred a 14-0 run with three 3-pointers and then had a steal and dunk that tied it 61.

But BYU (7-2) regained control and handed San Diego State (5-1) its first loss. The Aztecs won their first 26 games last season and were the nation’s last undefeated team en route to a 30-2 record.

After Matt Haarms made a baseline jumper for a 63-61 BYU lead, Mitchell made one of two free throws. Averette then hit a 3 from straight on to put BYU up 66-62 with 51 seconds left.

Barcello made four free throws in the last 35 seconds, sandwiched around a missed 3 by Mitchell, and Connor Harding made two free throws for the Cougars, who had a 40-26 rebounding edge.

Haarms and Averette scored 10 points apiece.

Jordan Schakel had only three points on 1-of-9 shooting after scoring a career-high 25 points in an 80-68 win at Arizona State on Dec. 10.

BYU’s biggest lead was 35-18 late in the first half before Mitchell made two free throws to make it 35-20 at halftime. SDSU shot just 25 percent and had eight turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Schakel had no points and missed his only two shots.

Jaden Springer scored 21 points to lead the Volunteers over the Golden Eagles.

The 6-foot-4 freshman also had six rebounds and six assists and was one of six Volunteers (4-0) in double figures. JosiahJord­an James and Victor Bailey Jr. scored 15 points each, John Fulkerson had 13 points and six rebounds, Keon Johnson scored 13 points, and Yves Pons had 10 points and two blocks.

The Golden Eagles (0-8) were led by Jr. Clay with 13 points. Keishawn Davidson added 12 points.

NO. 8 WEST VIRGINIA 70 IOWA STATE 65

Miles McBride scored 18 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 21 seconds left, to lift the Mountainee­rs to a win.

Derek Culver had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Mountainee­rs (7-1, 1-0 Big 12), who scored the final six points. They overcame poor shooting in their conference opener by making 14 of 16 free throws over the final six minutes.

Rasir Bolton scored a season

high 25 points for Iowa State (1-4, 0-2), which couldn’t overcome 21 turnovers.

ers scoring in double figures to help extend the Lady Bears’ national-best home winning streak to 60 games.

The 136 points was four short of the school record set four years ago.

Hannah Gusters, a 6-foot-5 freshman center, added 22 points on 11-of-14 shooting and Queen Egbo 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting for the Lady Bears (6-1), who shot 67.9% overall (57of-84).

DiJonia Carrington added 13 points while Jordyn Oliver and Sarah Andrews each had 12. Oliver also had 10 assists, while Caitlin Bickle had 11 rebounds.

NO. 6 ARIZONA 62 COLORADO 59

Aari McDonald overcame poor shooting in the first half with 8-for-8 sniping from the line in the fourth quarter and finished with 24 points as the Wildcats rallied to beat the Buffalaoes.

The Wildcats (5-0, 4-0 Pac-12) shot just 34 and trailed by as many as 12 points late in the third quarter before opening the final period with a 13-2 run and taking a 55-53 lead.

Jessika Carter had her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds to help the Bulldogs top the winless Jaguars.

Rickea Jackson added 15 points for the Bulldogs (4-1). Aliyah Matharu had 11 points.

Joanne Allen-Taylor scored 23 points and Audrey Warren had 18 as the Longhorns stormed past the Bulldogs.
