WATCH AT HOME
Here’s a look at what’s new or notable in home video. Movies and TV series are available on streaming sites such as itunes, Amazon and Vudu unless otherwise noted.
Notable — Binge watch
“A Discovery of Witches”: A reluctant witch (Teresa Palmer, “Lights Out”) raised by her aunt after the death of her parents opens a mystical book that entangles her in an epic struggle among witches, vampire and demons — and an interspecies romance. With sun-dappled settings such as Oxford University and Limousin, France, this BBC series based on Deborah Harkness’ “All Souls” trilogy gives a Masterpiece Theater gloss to supernatural fantasies akin to “Twilight” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” — all the more so in season two, which time travels to Elizabethan England.
Season one streaming for free on AMC+, Shudder and Sundance through Jan. 18; season two premieres Saturday on those platforms, with a new episode available every week.
New — Documentary
“Audrey”: Audrey Hepburn won her only Oscar at 24 for “Roman Holiday,” but she was just getting started. More unforgettable roles — “Sabrina,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Funny Face,” “My Fair Lady” — followed for the actress, fashion icon and
humanitarian. This documentary covers all that with film clips, archival audio of the actress, interviews and, interestingly, a series of ballet dancers portraying Hepburn at various ages.
Available for purchase now on streaming services after a limited theatrical run.
New — Blu-ray
“Love & Monsters”: Joel (Dylan O’brien) is a likable but awkward guy who’ll make you laugh, even when he’s trying to be serious: “Today was a (bad) day. We lost Connor to what looked like a really big ant.” Mutated insects, reptiles and
spiders have eaten most of humanity, and Joel’s can’t-do but gonna-try-anyway spirit carries this creature feature as he makes a perilous and not smart 85-mile journey to see his high school sweetheart. The monsters will make you laugh, too, especially the humongous frog.
Previously released in theaters; now on Blu-ray.
