Man arrested in killing of 11-year-old

- By Taylor Pettaway

A San Antonio man was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an 11year-old Judson youth sports cheerleader in August, an arrest affidavit shows.

D’morea Keys, 22, was arrested Thursday and charged with capital murder.

The affidavit alleges that Keys was attempting to shoot at another car when the vehicle that was carrying the girl, Donita Elizabeth Henry-phillips, was caught in the crossfire Aug. 15 in the 5400 block of Walzem Road.

The girl and a 34-year-old woman who also was in the car both were shot.

Donita was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died.

Video footage of the shooting showed a Dodge Avenger with black rims, dark-tinted windows and a pink steering wheel parked at the Windcrest Pediatric Denistry building about 6 p.m.

The driver, later identified as Keys, and the passenger both rolled down the windows and started shooting just as the car carrying the Phillips drove past, the affidavit alleges.

Police said they do not believe Keys knew anyone inside the victim’s vehicle.

The next day, the registered owner of the vehicle Keys was driving reported it missing.

Police said the woman denied anyone else had driven her car and became agitated with questions from officers and left, the affidavit states.

According to the affidavit, surveillance footage from a local shopping mall where the woman worked shows her allowing Keys to drive off in her vehicle the day of the shooting.

The surveillance footage also shows Keys, the woman and a third unidentified person inspecting the vehicle, the affidavit said.

An anonymous tip later identified Keys as one of the suspects.

After further investigation, he was arrested Thursday without incident by the SAPD’S Rapid Response Team.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and they expect to file more charges.
