Police chase ends with suspect shot

A multi-county vehicle pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies ended in a shootout Tuesday outside a Northside ISD elementary school that left the suspect in critical condition.

The pursuit began before 10:30 a.m. in Atascosa County and continued into the Southwest Side. It came to an end in front of Jerry D. Allen Elementary School, 101 Dumont Drive. It was then the unidentified driver, a male in his 30s or 40s, got out of his vehicle with a gun and started firing at law enforcement, according to Bexar County Sheriff spokesman Johnny Garcia.

Six law enforcement officers from various departments returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times in the upper torso. The officers immediately began life-saving measures before paramedics arrived to transport the suspect to the hospital.

No officers were injured, though one BCSO vehicle sustained damage from several gunshots.

Authorities initially pulled over the vehicle for a traffic violation in Pleasanton in Atascosa County, Garcia said. The passenger was taken into custody for an outstanding warrant. While officers were arresting him, the driver fled, according to Garcia. Authorities believe the driver has a parole violation.

The Atascosa County Sheriff's Department, BCSO, San Antonio police, Pleasanton police, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Northside ISD police were all involved in the chase.
