2 officers punished for slurs in posts

- By Taylor Pettaway STAFF WRITER

Two San Antonio police officers were suspended over comments and videos posted on social media amid last summer's protests against racial injustice, according to suspension records provided by the department.

Rudy P. Guzman, a detective on the force, was suspended for 10 days after an investigation into posts on his personal Facebook revealed “inappropriate and offensive” videos and comments, records show.

SAPD also said one of its officers, Cody W. Haegelin, was suspended for 10 days over two Facebook posts he made on June 30.

In his first post, Haegelin wrote: “Right now you have all the rejects/losers backing this ignorant movement. The working class are silent. Keep it coming and see how the ball rolls when the people paying for all you ignorant (expletive) have had enough.”

The second message, also posted that same day, read: “Because Trump isn't ‘racist' for the last (expletive) time … People now a days wouldn't know racism as their ancestor KNEW it.”

The department said Haegelin's actions were not in good conduct and discredited himself and SAPD. He served his suspension between Jan. 4 and Jan. 13.

The department said Guzman posted Tiktok videos, a meme and comments to his page on May 28 — three days after George Floyd died while in Minneapolis police custody.

One video was of the Venezuelan military using a vehicle-mounted water cannon on protesters, according to suspension records.

The department said Guzman posted offensive comments under two videos, but the suspension records did not describe what the detective wrote.

The department said the posts “did not conform to the ordinary and reasonable rules of good conduct and behavior” and “brought reproach and discredit to himself and the department.”

He served his suspension between Nov. 15 to Nov. 24.
