UTSA grads will have in-person ceremonies, minus guests

- By Madalyn Mendoza

Graduation season will have some semblance of normalcy at UTSA this May compared with last year.

The university announced that both current graduates and students who missed out on walking the stage last spring and fall will have the chance to enjoy semi-traditional, inperson ceremonies in May.

Last year, virtual events became the norm due to the pandemic. This year, masked Roadrunners are invited to on-campus ceremonies, but their guests are not, according to the announcement.

In-person ceremonies for 2021 graduates are scheduled for May 14-16. Students from the past spring and fall semesters will be able to walk the stage to mark their achievements May 21-23. Unlike previous years, the graduations will take place at various buildings on the main campus, rather than at the Alamodome.

Family and friends will not be permitted, but can watch livestreams for each ceremony. UTSA also has arranged opportunities to give guests the chance to celebrate the memory with their graduates.

“While this semester’s ceremonies will look different than in past years, they will include many traditional aspects to honor graduating students combined with additional events to allow for family participation,” the school said in a statement.

UTSA said it took feedback from students on must-have traditions when planning the modified event. Graduating students will have the opportunity to walk the stage and have their name announced. They also will be able to pose for the traditional, official cap and gown photo after receiving their diploma.

Grads will be spaced out and will be required to wear face masks, except during photos.

Family and friends are invited to participate in the Commencement Drive on May 14, a new tradition birthed out of the pandemic. The Student Union Ski Lodge will be set up like a traditional commencement stage for photo opportunities.

UTSA is also planning on accommodating graduates who wish to walk the stage at a later date, when guests are allowed to attend. Those interested in that opportunity can email commencement@utsa.edu.
