Aston gets UTSA job after stint at Texas

- Nick Moyle

Former Texas coach Karen Aston has been named the new leader of the UTSA women's basketball program, the school announced Monday.

Aston led the Longhorns to four straight Sweet 16 appearances from 2015-18, highlighted by a run to the Elite Eight in 201.

But Texas fizzled during her final two seasons, receiving a No. 7 seed and a first-round exit from the 2019 NCAA Tournament and earning a projection as a potential double-digit seed before the 2020 tournament was canceled. The decision to not extend her contract was announced in April 2020.

She finished her eight-year tenure with a 184-83 record.

“I am beyond thrilled to be the coach at UTSA,” Aston said in a statement. “I'm so excited to get back on the floor and help this program grow and to engage the San Antonio community.”

Aston replaces Kristen Holt, who was not renewed as Roadrunners coach after her four seasons produced a 24-83 overall record and a 10-54 mark in Conference USA. The 2020-21 season was the least successful in program history, as UTSA went 2-18 overall and 0-14 in the league.

Greg Luca UT swimming legend Reese to retire: After 43 seasons, 15 national championships, 42 consecutive conference titles, and 12 NCAA runner-up finishes, legendary Texas men's swimming and diving coach Eddie Reese, 79, is retiring. The announcement came two days after Texas claimed another national title at the NCAA meet at Greensboro, N.C.
