Records fell, and the Reagan girls won their fifth straight district title.

The Rattlers broke seven meet records, including a city mark, en route to winning the District 28-6A championship Thursday at Heroes Stadium.

Reagan tallied 197 points in the two-day event to pull away from Brandeis, which finished second with 166.

Johnson’s boys won their fourth straight title and seventh in the last nine years. The Jaguars, who outscored Brandeis 181-160, won from 2011-14, finished second in 2015 and 2016, before regaining the crown in 2017 to now (there was no meet in 2020 due to COVID-19).

“These guys have really bought into what we’ve built here and the culture around here,” Johnson boys coach Keith Randle said. “All the credit goes to the kids.”

Reagan’s girls broke meet records in the 400-meter relay, 800 relay, 100 dash, 300 hurdles, 200 dash, pole vault and long jump. The Rattlers swept the relays. They won the 1,600 relay with a season-best time of 1:57.19.

The Rattlers opened the running finals Thursday by breaking the city record in the 400 relay. The team of Madeline Mcelroy, Taylen Wise, Alyssa Quinonesmixon and Jasmine Montgomery clocked 45.48, winning by more than four seconds. As of Thursday night, that time was tops in the nation.

Judson set the previous mark (45.64) in 2017.

“I think that’s amazing, but we still have a long way to go, so we just got to keep executing and keep working hard and keep depending on each other,” Wise said. “I am very proud. I did leave a little bit early on the first exchange, so I had to come up and recover, but when I gave it to Alyssa I said, ‘Let’s go,’ and she went.”

Reagan’s 800 relay team of Aniya Ross, Hunter Simmons, Quinones-mixon and Mackenzie Dagrosa ran a record time of 1:39.88. Johnson held the previous record (1:41.05, 2015).

Wise also broke two meet records in the 300 hurdles and the long jump.

Wise won the 300 hurdles by more than three seconds in 44.18.

“It’s my first year doing hurdles, so I don’t know how to talk about it, but I was working on my arms to help my trail leg get down faster and help me move faster down the track,” she said.

In Wednesday’s field events, Wise broke the meet’s long jump record with a mark of 18 feet, 10½ inches.

Wise also won the triple jump with a 39-7½, claiming the event by almost two feet.

Montgomery set new records in 100 dash (11.53) and 200 dash (23.82).

Also, Quinones-mixon set a new meet record in the girls pole vault with a clearance of 12 feet, 7 inches. New Braunfels’ Demi Payne (2009) and Madison’s Emily Davila (2016) shared the previous record (12-6).

The Rattlers trailed Brandeis by 20 points after 10 events. But Reagan took the lead for good with a 1-2-3 finish by Montgomery, Simmons and Mcelroy in the 100 dash that put the Rattlers ahead by four points.

Johnson’s boys held the lead by eight points over Brandeis entering Thursday’s final day.

Dylan Dehoyos won the long jump (22-6 5½) and triple jump (45-6) on Wednesday and the 400 dash (49.85) on Thursday for the Jaguars.

Other individual winners for the Jaguars included Alejandro Tavarez in the 110 hurdles (14.56) and Caanan Fairley in the 300 hurdles (39.38).

“It was a collective effort,” Randle said. “We had a few hiccups in certain events stepped up. The hurdles were big and the distance were huge, and we got major contributors from field events.”

Roosevelt’s Nazzio John set meet records in the boys 100 dash (10.65) and 200 dash (21.47).

Brandeis’ Tristan Galvan won the 800 run, the 1,600 run and 3,200 run. He set personal bests in 800 (1:55.68) and 1,600 (4:15.77), which also was a meet record.

“I had a great time doing it,” Galvan said. “All my races this week was just breezy and nice and easy.”
