Early voting for local races starts today
Early voting is set to begin Monday for local elections, including heavily contested races for San Antonio mayor and City Council seats, two propositions and a number of suburban and school district contests.
Early voting continues through April 27 at 37 polling sites throughout Bexar County. Voting hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 26-27. Voting locations will be closed Sunday. Election Day is May 1.
In San Antonio, races for mayor and all 10 City Council seats are contested.
San Antonio voters also will decide two proposed city charter amendments. Proposition A would give the city authority to use bonds for “any public purpose,” including construction of affordable housing. Proposition B would remove San Antonio police officers’ right to bargain collectively with the city.
More than half a dozen school districts in Bexar County have board elections. Aside from council races, four small cities also have special propositions or proposed charter amendments on the ballot.
Voters in Alamo Heights will consider a local sales tax for street repairs. Converse voters will decide three proposed charter amendments and two propositions regarding annexation. Von Ormy has a proposed sales tax for street maintenance, along with a proposed abolition of a sales tax for separate economic development and community development corporations. Kirby voters will decide 15 proposed charter amendments.
