Franco tapped as mandatory challenger
“El Profesor” is moving to the head of the class.
San Antonio super lightweight champion Joshua Franco has been informed by the World Boxing Association that he is the next mandatory challenger for the WBA’S 115-pound super championship.
Fresh off his one-sided victory over Andrew Moloney for the WBA’S regular super flyweight title, Franco (18-1-2, 8 KOS) was notified in a letter from the WBA championships committee that he must fight the winner of the Juan Francisco Estradaroman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez showdown for the ratings organization’s “super” championship, scheduled for Oct. 16.
Alzafar Shrine card set for Saturday
Undefeated San Antonio featherweight Javier Fernandez (6-0, 4 KOS) headlines a 10-bout Triple-a Promotions pro boxing
card Saturday night at the Alzafar Shrine Auditorium.
Fernandez’s opponent is TBA.
San Antonio welterweight Kenny Williams (4-6-1, 2 KOS) is scheduled to take on Rodrigo Octavio Gonzalez (3-1-2, 1 KO) of
Georgetown in the six-round co-main event.
Other local fighters scheduled to appear include Eddie Ortiz Jr. (11-1-2, 4 KOS) and 17year-old amateur standout Melissa Holguin making her pro debut.
Tickets are $70 (table) and $30 general admission, plus $10 for parking.
Arredondo returns to winning ways
San Antonio featherweight Henry Arredondo rebounded from the only loss of his career with a fourth-round (0:10) knockout of Charles Clark (3-8-1, 1 KO) of Dallas in the main event a pro boxing card at Davies Boxing and Fitness on Aug. 20.
It was the first fight for Arredondo (8-1, 5 KOS) since losing to Eros Correa on Nov. 14 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
In other bouts, Iranda Paola Torres (13-6-1, 4 KOS) defeated Brittany Cruz (12-13-2, 2 KOS) of Thornton, Colo., by unanimous decision in a six-round super featherweight match.
Floyd Schofield (7-0, 6 KOS) of Austin knocked out Roberto Almazan (10-15, 4 KOS) of Brownsville at 1:01 of the second round.
