KSAT meteorologist’s forecast for fun
Mike Osterhage, KSAT’S morning meteorologist and co-host of “SA Live,” starts his day at 2 a.m.
That’s really early, but his schedule gives him an opportunity to spend more time with his family and enjoy his hobbies, which including woodworking — he once built a patio set in his spare time — and cooking dishes such as fettuccine Alfredo and chocolate souffle, one of his wife, Bonny’s, favorite desserts.
He also enjoys going to concerts with his wife at the Majestic Theatre.
Osterhage, who started his broadcasting career 35 years ago, worked at stations in Memphis, Tenn., Green Bay, Wis., and Flint, Mich., before landing in Texas. He also has done some acting on commercials and some modeling. He and his wife met when they were working as models at a bridal show in Memphis. They have been married for 24 years and have two sons, Jack and Ty.
We recently caught up with Osterhage to talk about what keeps him entertained, as well as his most memorable moment on the job.
What are your favorite television shows right now?
Lately, “Ted Lasso.” It is hilarious! “Yellowstone” on Netflix. Also, I’m waiting for “Ozark” to come back. “Succession” is another good one. Oh, and “Lucifer” — that was a binge!
There have been a few notable movies and TV shows featuring meteorologists. Do you have a favorite?
Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day” was pretty good, and the weatherman Rainer Shine (Nathan Fillion) from “Modern Family.” It’s kind of fun how they poke fun because we’re always kind of the brunt of jokes.
What are you reading right now?
I’m a big Tom Clancy fan, and one of his books is “The Hunt for Red October.” It happens to be one of my favorite movies, too. I love reading his books because of how detailed he is.
What was the last good concert or show you attended?
Last year, right before all of the lockdowns, Bonny and I saw the Temptations and the Four Tops at the Majestic Theatre, and we loved it. Oh, gosh, we’ve caught a few great concerts and shows at the Majestic, and sometimes we take the boys, too. It’s such a beautiful place.
What are you always recommending to people?
Probably restaurants. I love all types of pizza, but Florio’s Pizza is family-owned and they’re from New Jersey. It’s so good, I love it. Shiro Japanese restaurant for sushi is really good.
What was the most memorable moment in your career?
I flew with the (U.S. Air Force) Thunderbirds and, yeah … it was very cool! You take off, hauling down the runway, and he pulls back on the stick and you’re at 13,000 feet in about two seconds. He let me take the controls for a while … doing loops and rolls. It was shot on an old camera from when the boys were little, so every once in a while, I’ll tell (my boys), “You want to watch me and the Thunderbirds pull 9 Gs again?” It was very neat.
Have you made any discoveries lately — something new to you?
A few months ago, we did a story for the show and we took a ride on the double-decker bus. When you’re one story up, it’s a whole different view; just being up that little bit higher, it was really fascinating. Doing a tour like that around town was pretty cool to help see things from a different perspective.
