Incarnate Word crushes Prairie Viewa&m

Incarnate Word quarterbac­k Cameron Ward threw three touchdown passes and the Cardinals opened up a 30-point lead by halftime, cruising to a 40-9 win against Prairie View A&M on Saturday at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.

Ward completed 21 of 38 passes for 208 yards, while Kevin Brown ran for 51 yards and a touchdown and Marcus Cooper added 47 rushing yards with a score. CJ Hardy, Taylor Grimes and Roger Mcculler pulled in receiving touchdowns.

After UIW’S defense was torched for 463 yards in last week’s 44-41 loss to Youngstown State, the Cardinals (1-1) rebounded with four intercepti­ons, keeping the Panthers scoreless until the fourth quarter. Linebacker Kelechi Anyalebech­i snared a pair of picks, while Darius Sanders and Brandon Richard each had one.

UIW next travels to face Texas State at 6 p.m. Saturday in San Marcos.

TEXAS ST. 23 FLORIDA INT. 17 (OT)

Brock Sturges scored his second touchdown of the game from 11 yards out in overtime to lift the Bobcats to a victory at Riccardo Silva Stadium in Miami.

Quarterbac­k Brady Mcbride completed 18 of 31 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown, adding 53 yards on the ground. Calvin Hill ran for 72 yards, Sturges picked up 43, and Marcell Barbee paced Texas State’s receivers with eight grabs for 67 yards.

The Bobcats (1-1) won despite being outgained 400-336, recovering three Panthers fumbles. Caeveon Patton’s recovery after a strip sack by Issiah Nixon on FIU’S first possession in overtime set up Texas State’s winning score.

TRINITY 64, MACALESTER 0

Trinity opened the year in dominating fashion, jumping out to a 43-point lead at halftime and cruising past Macalester at Trinity University Football Stadium.

Quarterbac­k Tucker Horn completed 20 of 23 passes for 332 yards with six touchdowns, including two to Ryan Merrifield. Gerald Daniels ran for 74 yards and a score, while Legend Grigsby chipped in 73 yards and a TD.

The Tigers racked up 643 yards to 125 for the Scots.
