Lady Vols top Longhorns in OT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Jordan Horston scored 28 points with 15 rebounds, both career highs, Tamari Key had a triple-double and No. 16 Tennessee made 6 of 8 free throws in overtime to defeat No. 12 Texas 76-70 on Sunday.

Key scored 10 points, grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and matched her career-high with 10 blocked shots for her second career triple-double and the fifth in school history. Alexus Dye and Jordan Walker both added 13 points for the Lady Vols (4-0), who got their second-straight win over a ranked opponent.

Mississipp­i State transfer Aliyah Matharu led the Longhorns (3-1), who own a win at then No. 3 Stanford, with a career-high 27 points. Joanne Allen-taylor added 11 points and Rori Harmon 10.

NO. 3 MARYLAND 79 NO. 6 BAYLOR 76

Ashley Owusu scored 24 points and the Terrapins handed the Bears their first loss of the post-kim Mulkey era at College Park, Md.

The Terrapins (6-0) led 76-65 before a furious Baylor rally nearly forced overtime. The Bears had the ball down by three, but Sarah Andrews missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds.

This was the first significan­t test for the Bears (3-1) under new coach Nicki Collen, who took over after Mulkey left for LSU. Nalyssa Smith had 30 points and 15 rebounds for Baylor, and Jordan Lewis added 29 points.

Hannah Jump and Francesca Belibi each scored 14 points for the Cardinal in a close game at Spokane, Wash.

Honesty Scott-grayson scored 18, Aicha Coulibaly added 14 and the Tigers used a big first half to win at Atlanta.

Aubrey Joens hit five 3-pointers for the second straight game and increased her career best to 21 points to lead the Cyclones over the Jaguars at Ames, Iowa.

Morgan Jones scored a

career-high 25 points and Valencia Myers added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the host Seminoles in their win over the Tigers.

Jones, a first-team ALLACC guard, made 8 of 12 field goal attempts and 9 of 14 free throws. The Seminoles (4-0) also got 12 points from River Baldwin.

Alexus Holt finished with 13 points to lead four Grambling (2-2) players in double figures — Justice Coleman (12), Colbi Maples (11) and Jurnee Mclaurin (10).

NO. 19 KENTUCKY 92 WINTHROP 47

Rhyne Howard had the third triple-double in Kentucky history to lead the host Wildcats over Winthrop.

Howard scored 22 points with 10 rebounds and 10 assists — plus five steals — for the first UK triple-double since Makayla Epps (21-11-12) on Nov. 18, 2015, as the Wildcats (3-1) bounced back from a loss at top 10 Indiana.

Kirsten Deans scored 16 points and 10 of 11 West Virginia players scored in the Mountainee­rs’ rout.

Esmery Martinez added 12 points, making five of

seven shots, and added seven rebounds and a pair of steals in 15 minutes for the Mountainee­rs (3-0).

Destinee Marshall led Radford (1-3) with 11 points.

Men

NO. 6 PURDUE 80 NO. 5 VILLANOVA 74

Purdue’s biggest men came up large in a huge early season game.

Zach Edey scored 21 points and No. 6 Purdue overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to beat No. 5 Villanova 80-74 on Sunday and win the Hall of Fame Tip-off Tournament.

The 7-foot-4 center hit nine of his 12 shots from the floor and grabbed six rebounds. The team’s other post, 6-10 Trevion Williams, added nine points and four boards for the Boilermake­rs (5-0), who outscored the Wildcats 38-18 in the paint.

“Trevion and Zach is a really good 1-2 punch and I thought offensivel­y they had an above average game,” coach Matt Painter said. “Between them they had 30 and 10, and I thought Trevion’s defense when we switched five ways he got down in a stance and was the difference.”

Justin Moore had 19 points, Caleb Daniels added

17 and Collin Gillespie had 14 for Villanova (3-2).

Tennessee’s two freshmen guards combined for 32 points and 13 assists as the Volunteers bounced back from their first loss of the season to beat the Tar Heels in the consolatio­n game of the Hall of Fame Tip-off tournament at Uncasville, Conn.

Zakai Zeigler scored 18 points to go with five assists, Kennedy Chandler had 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds for the Volunteers.

“Both those guys really did a good job in terms of, I thought, even simple sort of motion,” coach Rick Barnes said. “We obviously like to get (Zeigler) running to the basket some, which there at the end he and Kennedy, where they’re playing those two-man games, he’s very effective there as well.”

Santiago Vescovi added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Vols (3-1), who were coming off a 71-53 loss to Villanova on Saturday.

Brady Manek hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 points for the Tar Heels (3-2).
