Wisconsin holds off Houston rally in Maui semifinals

-

LAS VEGAS — A late rally came up short as No. 12 Houston suffered its first loss of the season 65-63 to Wisconsin on Tuesday at Michelob ULTRA Arena.

Kyler Edwards had 15 of his 18 points in the second half — including five momentum-shifting 3-pointers — as the Cougars rallied from a 20-point deficit and had a chance for the game-tying shot as time expired.

Johnny Davis had a game-high 30 points for the Badgers, who advance to the championship game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

Edwards hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game to pull the Cougars within 65-63 with 37.1 seconds left. Davis held the ball to the end of the shot clock and missed, allowing the Cougars one last shot. But Jamal Shead was unable to get off a shot on the left wing as time expired.

UH (4-1) will play Oregon or Saint Mary’s in the third-place game at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner of that game will meet Wisconsin for the championship.
