MLK art contest entries due today

- By Megan Rodriguez

Artists still have time to submit work to the San Antonio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission’s citywide art contest now that the deadline has been pushed back.

But there’s not a lot of time — they need to be sent in by 5 p.m. today.

Student artists are “especially encouraged to apply” according to the city of San Antonio website, but the contest is open to all current Bexar county residents.

The seventh annual contest is all in preparation for the 2022 march and commemorative program honoring MLK on Jan. 17. The artwork that is selected will be used in promotional materials for next year’s commemoration. The winner will receive two passes to all 2022 MLK, Jr. Commission events.

Winners are selected by a panel of judges made up of representatives from the San Antonio MLK, Jr. Commission and other community members.

The commission will retain ownership and full copyright of winning artwork and its reproductions, according to the contest guidelines.

Art submissions should be a high-quality photograph of the work and must be emailed to arts@sanantonio.gov with the subject line “2022 MLK Poster Contest” by 5 p.m. Artwork should fit the commemorative theme — “Free to be ...”

Artists also need to include a full name, contact information, age, school name, title of the art and the media used, whether that be watercolor, computer graphics or otherwise.

The website says that since image, likeness and direct quotes of King are copyrighted, any submissions with his image, likeness or quotes will be disqualified.
