Cold front expected to move in this weekend after balmy Friday
After the thermometer hit 83 degrees Friday, San Antonians will reach near freezing temperatures as a cold front sweeps through the area this weekend.
As of late Friday afternoon, the cold front was expected to arrive in the wee hours, dropping temperatures in San Antonio to the mid-50s and high 60s by this morning.
The cold weather won’t stick around long, meteorologists said — the upper 70s will return by Tuesday.
As the front moves in, there will be 20 to 25 mph wind speeds with gusts up to 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The breezy weather will drop off by tonight, National Weather Service Meteorologist Jason Runyen said Friday afternoon.
Sunday morning, San Antonians inside of loop 1604 will see low temperatures between 34 and 37 degrees but some far Northwest areas of Bexar County outside of Loop 1604 approaching Boerne will dip to about 30 to 32 degrees. Runyen said officials expect a widespread freeze Sunday morning in the Hill Country.
It’s late in the year for a freeze. Runyen said that normally San Antonio has its first toward the end of November.
Friday, meteorologists were forecasting that temperatures in San Antonio would surpass daily record highs, but late Friday afternoon, Runyen said that did not end up being the case.
The record high temperature of 85 degrees for Dec. 10 was logged at the San Antonio International Airport and has stood since 1939. National Weather Service Meteorologist Nick Hampshire said early Friday morning that the temperature at the airport was expected to be 86 degrees, with temperatures around town ranging from 86 to 88 degrees. At the end of the day, Runyen said high temperatures about town ended up ranging from 83 to 88 degrees, with the official temperature logged at the San Antonio International Airport being 83 degrees.
