Don’t let stress sour the holidays

The holiday season can be full of joy and excitement, but it can also be very stressful. With to-do lists growing longer than ever, it can get overwhelming and steal holiday cheer. But all of us can take actions to make it through this time of year without feeling (and acting) like the Grinch.

Don’t overcommit. Write down what your priorities are and focus. Know your limits and say no when you must.

Keep on budget. You may not mail out Christmas cards this year, and you may not really want to participate in the 11th white elephant exchange for the season. Create a plan and stick with it.

You don’t have to have something scheduled to say no. To kindly refuse, try, “I would love to participate, and I appreciate the invite, but I’m overcommitted and won’t be able to attend.”

Move your body. Experts have told us over and over that a healthy diet and exercise are critical for our well-being. The holidays are no exception. Try to move your body at least 30 minutes a day. Get your blood flow going and heart rate up to release your happy chemicals.

There are resources all over the internet, such as Pinterest, Youtube, Apple TV and more, for great workouts. Many require no special equipment. Start somewhere and watch how you grow and improve. Sticking with a healthful routine even in busy times by making it a priority is critical for keeping your mind right.

Rest. If you’re tired from being on the go, sit or lie down. The laundry, dishes and dinner can wait for you to catch a quick nap. Keep easy stuff on hand for kids, and think grab-and-go. Mandarin oranges, bananas, mac ’n’ cheese microwave bowls, cracker packs and cheese sticks are easy snacks so mom or dad can rest for a bit. If you really struggle to find time to relax, set a timer for 20 to 30 minutes and commit to an activity that helps you unwind or simply do nothing — absolutely nothing.

Remember that you are the only person who can control your mindset. You deserve to be the best version of yourself, so set boundaries and limits to protect your joy and well-being. Move your body and make sure to rest when your body says rest.

Happy holidays!
