Fredenburg leaves D-III champions

- Greg Rajan Nick Moyle

Fresh off leading Mary Hardin-baylor to its second Division III football national championship, head coach Pete Fredenburg announced his retirement Friday.

Fredenburg will be succeeded by Larry Harmon, his defensive coordinator of the past 17 seasons.

Fredenburg, 72, started the football program at the Belton-based school in 1998 after stints as an assistant at Baylor, LSU and Louisiana Tech. In their seventh season, the Crusaders played in the Stagg Bowl, Division III’S national championship game, for the first time.

UMHB had a 231-39 record during Fredenburg’s 24 seasons, making the postseason 17 times and going undefeated in American Southwest Conference play on 13 occasions.

Fredenburg’s last game was Dec. 17, a 57-24 win over North Central (Ill.) in the Stagg Bowl at Canton, Ohio. The Crusaders’ other national championship came in 2018 after beating Mount Union (Ohio) 24-16 at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah.

Thompson transferring to Nebraska: Former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson, who started 10 games and passed for 24 touchdowns in 2021, announced Friday that he will transfer to Nebraska. Thompson was a backup to Hudson Card for the first two games at Texas before taking over the starting role. He went 4-6 as the starter and passed for 2,113 yards. Texas finished 5-7 in a season that included the program’s first five-game losing streak since 1956.

The Oklahoma City native will be a graduate transfer. He announced the move on social media.

Thompson’s six touchdowns passes in an overtime loss to Kansas tied a Texas school record.

Klein to lead Kansas State offense: Kansas State assistant Collin Klein, who had been serving as the interim offensive coordinator during the bowl season, was given the full-time job on Friday after an impressive performance by the Wildcats in the Texas Bowl.

The former Heisman Trophy finalist put together a game plan for LSU that resulted in a school bowl-record 442 yards of total offense in a 42-20 rout of the Tigers on Tuesday night.
