UTEP sends UTSA to fifth straight loss

Souley Boum had 22 points to lead UTEP to a 69-64 win over UTSA in El Paso on Thursday night.

Jorell Saterfield had 17 points for UTEP (10-8, 3-3 Conference USA). Jamal Bieniemy added 10 points.

Jacob Germany had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Roadrunner­s (7-12, 0-6), who have lost five straight games.

The Roadrunner­s also got the news Friday afternoon that they’ll play Middle Tennessee in Murfreesbo­ro, Tenn., in a reschedule­d Conference USA game Feb. 7.

UTSA originally was scheduled to play Middle Tennessee on Dec. 30, but the Blue Raiders had to postpone the game because of COVID-19 concerns. The schedule change places UTSA in a threegame road swing that includes a

Feb. 3 game at Rice and a Feb. 5 game at North Texas.

TEXAS STATE 69 ARKANSAS-LITTLE ROCK 59

Caleb Asberry had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bobcats to a win in Little Rock.

Nighael Ceaser had 12 points for Texas State (12-4, 3-1 Sun Belt). Isiah Small and Mason Harrell each had 10 points.

CJ White and Myron Gardner each had 13 points for the Trojans (6-9, 1-2). D.J. Smith added 10 points.

HOUSTON BAPTIST 68, UIW 65

Darius Lee had a season-high 25 points along with 12 rebounds as the Hiuskies edged the Cardinals at the Convocatio­n Center. Lee’s two free throws with 28 seconds remaining gave Houston Baptist an eight-point cushion.

Jade Tse had 17 points for

Houston Baptist (5-10, 1-4 Southland), which snapped its fourgame losing streak.

Johnny Hughes III had 21 points for the Cardinals (4-15, 1-4). Robert ”RJ” Glasper added 15 points, and Josh Morgan had 10 points.

The Huskies leveled the season series against the Cardinals after UIW defeated Houston Baptist 60-50 on Jan. 8. for 5 from the field and nailing 6 of 7 from the line.

UTEP 69, UTSA 52

Lapraisjah Johnson scored 10 points, but the Roadrunner­s couldn’t overcome nine 3-pointers from the Miners in a loss at the UTSA Convocatio­n Center.

UTSA is now 4-13 overall and 1-5 in Conference USA.

HOUSTON BAPTIST 62, UIW 57

Jaaucklyn Moore finished with a game-high 19 points and Destiny Terrell added 11, but a 6-0 fourth-quarter run lifted the Huskies past the Cardinals at the Convocatio­n Center.

The Cardinals host Mcneese State on Saturday.

TEXAS-ARLINGTON 69 TEXAS STATE 67

Jo’nah Johnson hit a layup to extend the Bobcats’ to five with 27 seconds to play, but the Mavericks went on an 8-1 run to steal the win in Arlington.

A turnover by Texas State on an inbound allowed the Mavericks to draw up a one final offensive play. It resulted in De’sha Benjamin being fouled with 0.7 seconds left and sinking both free throws.

Wagner graduate Da’nasia Hood led the Bobcats with 22 points.

EASTERN NEW MEXICO 77 ST. MARY’S 61

A lopsided fourth-quarter cost the Rattler in a road loss.

With only eight active players — and just two of those eight listed as guards — the Rattlers (1-13, 0-3 Lone Star Conference) were outscored 21-9 in the fourth quarter.

St. Mary’s also was missing coach Jason Martens.
