Every Thursday night in February, Turner Classic Movies celebrates an actressdancer-singer who is one of the rare “EGOT” talents (an artist who has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony) — Rosa Dolores Alverío Marcano, better known as Rita Moreno. The iconic star turned 91 in December and is still active in the business. The first two weeks feature
movies in which Moreno had early supporting roles, starting with tonight’s lineup: the 1952 film noir “The Ring,” one of the earliest Hollywood sports films to depict institutionalized bigotry; the beloved 1952 Gene Kelly/debbie Reynolds/donald O’connor-led musical “Singin’ in the Rain” (Moreno is the last surviving credited star); the 1952 musical comedy “The Fabulous Senorita”; the 1953 romantic comedy/musical “Latin Lovers,” directed by Mervyn Leroy, and starring Lana Turner and Ricardo Montalbán; and the 1952 Western “Cattle Town.”
