A&M seeks to expand Greek groups
Texas A&M University-san Antonio is looking to foster the growth of Greek life on campus.
The university wants new fraternities and sororities to open chapters at the San Antonio campus, according to an A&MSAN Antonio news release.
The Fraternity/sorority Expansion Committee — which comprises faculty and staff representatives, as well as a delegate from each chapter of the All-greek Council — will ensure “expansion of fraternity and sorority life at A&M-SAN Antonio is conducive to the university's mission and values,” according to the news release.
The university will field applications throughout the spring 2023 semester, and “selected organizations” will give presentations on campus in March and April.
Organizations interested in expanding into the Fraternity & Sorority Life community will be evaluated on points delineated by the university in the news release, including: history of the organization; risk management policy, including hazing, alcohol and substance abuse and health education; member's financial requirements and potential future housing.
The university said local fraternities and sororities would not be recognized as members of the Fraternity & Sorority Life community, drawing a hard line for grassroots groups forming after the start of the expansion.
“Expansion/extension for a fraternity/sorority is not automatic,” and “‘campus crashing' or forming a group of interested students without the approval of the Office of Student Life or by the Inter/national headquarters will not be tolerated,” the release said.
Aspiring organizations will be notified of the committee's selections in May and can begin recruiting members in the fall.
