Adolph Caesar, Art Evans, David Alan Grier, David Harris, Patti Labelle and Denzel Washington in his second feature film appearance. Following is “Sergeant Rutledge” (1960), director John Ford’s Western that centers around the fictional court-martial of the titular character (played by Woody Strode), a Black first sergeant
in a “colored regiment” of the U.S. Cavalry in the early 1880s who is wrongly accused of the rape and murder of a white girl.
