Cowboys’ Jones sees suit revived

-

DALLAS — A Texas appellate court ruled that a previously dismissed 2020 personal injury lawsuit against Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones should proceed, reversing a previous dismissal.

The case, originally filed in a Dallas County district court, was dismissed in February 2022 but will now resume and is likely to go to trial.

The lawsuit stems from an alleged incident on Sept. 16, 2018 at AT&T Stadium. A woman claims Jones “kisser her on the mouth and forcibly grabbed her without her consent.”

Jones denied the accusations.

Falcons cut Mariota:

Before the start of the NFL scouting combine and free-agency talks, quarterback Marcus Mariota was released by Atlanta, giving the Falcons an additional $12 million in salarycap space, pushing their total to $66 million.

Tampa Bay, $56 million over the salary cap, plans to release running back Leonard Fournette prior to the start of the new league year March 15.

Eagles hire new coordinators:

The NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles are moving on with new offensive and defensive coordinators.

The Eagles promoted quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator, replacing Shane Steichen after he left to become head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles also named Sean Desai as defensive coordinator, hiring him away from his role as associate head coach with the Seattle Seahawks. Desai succeeds Jonathan Gannon, who left to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Bills’ DC to take year off:

The Buffalo Bills coaching staff has a big hole to fill at defensive coordinator after Leslie Frazier informed the team he is taking a year off from coaching but plans to return for the 2024 season. Coach Sean Mcdermott cited what was a “long and hard season” in saying Frazier informed him of the decision last week.

Shorter games is goal for 2023

College football administrators are looking at ways to reduce the number of plays in games in the name of player safety, with a tweak in clock operating procedures likely the first step.

The NCAA Football Rules Committee is meeting in Indianapolis this week, and recommendations it forwards and approved in the spring would take effect next season.

A proposal to let the game clock continue running when a team makes a first down, except in the last two minutes of a half, has broad support.

NHL

Kane to Rangers close to reality

Carolina is buying low on an underachieving young scorer, while the NHL awaits the long-anticipated trade of Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers.

The Hurricanes acquired winger Jesse Puljujarvi in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers for the rights to 22-year-old unsigned draft pick Patrik Puistola, giving one of the top Stanley Cup contenders in the Eastern Conference an offensive-minded player who has yet to reach his potential.

Kane could make his Rangers debut as soon as Wednesday at Philadelphia in the same arena he scored the series-clinching goal in 2010 that ended Chicago’s 49-year Cup drought.
