Roddy Kurtz

June 23, 1948 - February 27, 2023

-

Rodney Albert “Roddy” Kurtz lost his battle to cancer on February 27, 2023, with his wife and family by his side. He was naturally giving, remembered as someone who did for others, whenever he could. He and his wife, Linda Jean Lenz Kurtz, were married for 53 years.

Roddy was born on June 23, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated in 1966 from St. Gerard’s Regional High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda, on Valentine’s Day, 1970. He is survived by his wife and three children: Rodd (Shannon Grelle Kurtz), Chad (Kristin Logsdon Kurtz), Kristen Kurtz Gavito (Michael Gavito). Roddy and Linda have seven grandchildren: Brett, Katelyn (and Adam), Chase, Kendall, Kenzie, Eleanor, and Belle. Known as either “Grampy” or “Hiya,” he treasured these seven heartbeats who so profoundly touched his life. Roddy’s grandparent philosophy was “I will win because I have candy.”

Roddy is also survived by his two caring sisters: Kathie Kurtz and Bonnie Mazzurana (Art Mazzurana). He is also survived by his nephew, Jason Mazzurana (and Helen). He was preceded in death by his parents, Edna and Henry “Blackie” Kurtz. Roddy adored his parents and siblings, influenced by the roots they gave him through the example of a close-knit family.

Roddy loved sports— whether it was coaching his sons or following the Spurs, Cowboys, or UTSA—IT brought him joy. Roddy’s biggest passion was the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He hardly missed a deer season in the last 60 years. After Roddy retired, he and Linda moved to Boerne, where he lived out his dream of relaxing in the country and watching and feeding the local wildlife.

Roddy was always a tinkerer. He always had some project going on— woodworking, preparing for deer season, building blinds and feeders, gardening, and certainly fixing things (even things that weren’t always broken). He never sat still.

The family is immensely grateful to the gifted doctors, medical staff, and caregivers that helped along the way. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (givenow.lls.org). Services are at St. Matthews Catholic Church on March 10th at 1:00 p.m. He will be greatly missed.
