Iowa St. takes down No. 10 Baylor

- WIRE REPORTS NCAA Tournament.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Gabe Kalscheur hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 points, helping Iowa State overcome a spectacula­r performanc­e by Baylor forward Jalen Bridges and sending the Cyclones to a 78-72 victory over the No. 10 Bears in the quarterfin­als of the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday.

Jaren Holmes added 17 points, Tamin Lipsey had 12 and Tre King 10 for the fifth-seeded Cyclones (19-12), who followed up a win over the Bears (22-10) on Saturday by beating them for the fifth time in six conference tournament games.

Iowa State advanced to play Kansas in the semifinal round on Friday.

Bridges was held to 5 points on 1-for-9 shooting when the teams met last weekend in Waco, but the West Virginia transfer went 10-of-11 from the field and 6-of-6 from beyond the arc in the quarterfin­als. Bridges topped his career high with a 3 early in the second half, which gave the Bears a 50-42 lead, and wound up finishing with 28 points.

It wasn't enough against the Cyclones, who are trying to repeat their 2019 title as the No. 5 seed.

In a later quarterfin­al, third-ranked Kansas, which was playing without ailing coach Bill Self on the sideline, turned to big offensive performanc­es from Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris Jr. along with some stingy defense to pull away from West Virginia 75-61 in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfin­als.

Wilson had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Harris had 13 points with eight assists as the topseeded Jayhawks (26-6) began the defense of their tournament crown by knocking off the Mountainee­rs for the third time this season.

It was announced later in the day that Self would miss the entire Big 12 Tournament after going to the emergency room Wednesday night for what doctors called “a standard procedure,” and it's uncertain whether he will be back for the

Tolu Smith scored a career-high 28 points, including a go-ahead basket in overtime with 4.3 seconds left, as Mississipp­i State beat Florida 69-68 to advance to the tournament's quarterfin­als. The Bulldogs (21-11) advanced to play topseeded Alabama on Friday.

ACC

Jordan Miller had 18 points and nine rebounds for No. 14 Miami, which held off Wake Forest's furious comeback for a 74-72 victory in the tournament quarterfin­als. ACC player of the year Isaiah Wong had 17 points and five assists and Norchad Omier had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Miami — the top seed for the first time since 2013, when the Hurricanes won the ACC title game. … Kyle Filipowski overcame an early ankle injury to score 22 points and Tyrese Proctor added 11 points and 10 assists as No. 21 Duke cruised to a 96-69 win in the quarterfin­als over Pittsburgh. Dereck Lively II had 13 points and Mark Mitchell added 12 for the fourthseed­ed Blue Devils.

BIG TEN

Cam Spencer and Derek Simpson scored 23 of their combined 31 points in the second half as Rutgers beat Michigan 62-50 in the second round of the tournament.

Spencer scored 18 points and Simpson 13 for the ninth-seeded Scarlet Knights (19-13), who rebounded to shoot 52 percent in the second half after a 29 percent first half. … Bruce Thornton scored 17 points and Roddy Gayle Jr. had all nine of his points in the final six minutes to help 13thseeded Ohio State to a 73-69 win over fifth-seeded Iowa in the second round of the tournament.

PAC-12

Freshman Amari Bailey scored a season-high 26 points as No. 2 UCLA beat Colorado 80-69 to advance to the tournament semifinals. The Bruins (28-4) kept pushing for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament with their 11th straight win.

BIG EAST

Tyler Kolek scored all 19 of his points after halftime, including the tiebreakin­g free throws with 15.8 seconds left, as No. 6 Marquette rallied for a 72-70 overtime victory over feisty St. John's in the quarterfin­als. … Jordan Hawkins scored 19 points as No. 11 Connecticu­t held off a furious second-half rally to beat Providence 73-66 and advance to face Marquette in Friday's semifinal.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC

RJ Felton and Jaden Walker scored 22 points each in East Carolina's 73-58 win over South Florida in the first round

of the tournament. Felton added seven rebounds for the Pirates (16-16), who moved on to face the top-seeded University of Houston. Walker added six rebounds and 10 assists. Ezra Ausar was 6-of-8 from the free throw line to finish with 10 points. … CJ Kelly tallied 21 points as UCF took down SMU 76-70 in the tournament's opening round. Kelly was 6-of-11 shooting, including 3for-3 from distance, for the Knights (18-13).

ATLANTIC 10

David Shriver, Jamir Watkins and Adrian Baldwin Jr. scored 11 points apiece to help lead top-seed VCU over eightseed Davidson in a 71-53 victory in the quarterfin­als. … Gibson Jimerson had 21 points as Saint Louis beat George Mason 82-54 to advance to the tournament semifinals.

BIG WEST

JC Butler helped lead top-seed UC Irvine past eight-seed Cal State Bakersfiel­d with 13 points off of the bench in a 75-51 victory in the quarterfin­als.

MID-AMERICAN

Setric Millner Jr. and El Farmer had 19 points each in top-seeded Toledo's 91-75 quarterfin­al win against eighth-seeded Miami (Ohio). … AJ Brown led Ohio past Ball State with 28 points and seven rebounds off of the bench in a 90-70 quarterfin­al win.
