Uber passenger accused of killing driver
San Antonio police arrested a man they suspect fatally shot his Uber driver on the Northeast Side.
Dominique Dashon Croom, 30, was charged with murder Thursday in the death of 37-yearold Robert Carbonell Diaz, according to an affidavit supporting his arrest. Croom is being held on $200,000 bail.
San Antonio police were called to the 5900 block of Gibbssprawl Road for reports of a shooting in progress. A witness who had been pumping gas at the nearby Circle K told police he heard multiple gunshots coming from the intersection of Gibbs-sprawl and Castle Cross Drive.
The witness reported then seeing a white Lincoln Navigator traveling slowly through the intersection before driving over the sidewalk and stopping in an open wooded field. He said that at the same time, he saw a man wearing black and red clothing running away from the SUV.
Inside the Navigator, Diaz was unresponsive in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators found multiple spent casings in the right rear passenger area of the SUV, and Diaz’s iphone was mounted to the dashboard, showing an incomplete Uber ride. Croom’s name was listed as the Uber passenger.
The Uber app and surveillance footage showed that Diaz had picked up Croom from a nearby address on Rittiman Road about 10 minutes before the shooting was reported. Croom, wearing red and black clothing, was the only person seen getting into Diaz’s SUV, the affidavit said.
A witness found at the pickup spot identified Croom as the person seen in the surveillance video, the affidavit said.
Police did not say what led to the shooting.
