Chavez’s granddaughter, an adviser to Biden, will attend March for Justice
People from all walks of life will march Saturday in honor of Latino and farm labor leader César E. Chávez.
Chávez’s granddaughter Julie Chávez Rodriguez — who serves as senior adviser to President Joe Biden — is expected to attend.
This is the 27th year of the César E. Chávez March for Justice. It starts on the West Side at 1310 Guadalupe, the intersection of Guadalupe and Brazos streets by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, and travels to downtown San Antonio.
The theme is “Finding True Life through Service to Others.”
The commemorative morning program will start with speakers on stage at 9 a.m. Councilwoman Rosie Castro and her sons, former Mayor Julián Castro and U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, will serve as the family grand marshals.
Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for drop-off in bins from the “Yes We Can/sí Se Puede” campaign.
Donations benefit the San Antonio Food Bank.
At 10 a.m., marchers will head east on Guadalupe Street, veer North on South Flores Street, then turn East onto César E. Chávez Boulevard. The march ends at 420 S. Alamo St., in the Hemisfair parking lot behind the Magik Theatre. The celebration will continue at Hemisfair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include special guest speakers, several food trucks and music by DJ Plata.
From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., VIA will offer free service from the Alamodome to the march starting point, 1310 Guadalupe. Return service will be available until 2:30 p.m. from Bowie Street by the Institute of Texan Cultures’ Gate 4. Free parking will be available at parking lots B and C, 100 Montana St., also the pickup point for march participants.
