Construction to start soon on San Marcos film studio

- By Liz Teitz

Construction could start early next year on a huge film studios project planned for San Marcos.

Hill Country Studios couple begin work on its first buildings, two sound stages, as early as February. according to a recent state filing.

Stages Six and Seven will be 25,000 square feet each, with an additional two-story 24,000-squarefoot support building, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records shows. The $20 million project is projected to start Feb. 4 and be completed by mid-august, according to the filings with the state.

The sound stages are part of the $267 million studio project in the La Cima development, near West Centerpoint Road and West Wonder World Drive. Plans call for 12 production stages, four workshops, a welcome center and 250,000 square feet of office space.

In July and August, the San Marcos City Council voted unanimously to approve annexation and rezoning requests for the 148-acre property, which was previously outside city limits. About 90 acres were zoned to allow for the film and television production studios, while 58 acres wrapping around the perimeter were rezoned to keep them vacant and undeveloped.

In 2022, the council approved millions of dollars of property tax rebates for the studios, with those scheduled to begin in 2025.

In announcing plans for the production facility last year, Hill Country Studios Chief Operating Officer Zach Price said the goal was to attract some of the largest film studios in the nation, like Netflix, Disney, Paramount and NBC Universal, to use the facility.
