Harlandale ISD board member arrested
Harlandale Independent School District trustee Christine Carrillo has submitted her resignation days after being accused of attacking her husband, the district said.
Carrillo was arrested on Christmas Eve and charged with assault causing bodily injury. She was released from jail after posting bond.
According to a police report, the incident started with an argument that escalated into a fight.
Carrillo allegedly grabbed her husband by his shirt collar and struck him with an open hand, according to the report. She also is accused of scratching him repeatedly.
She later told police that she had “been in a bad mood all day” and had been arguing with her son-in-law shortly before the altercation began, according to the report. When her husband tried to step in to calm her down, that’s when it got physical, the report stated.
Her husband attempted to hold Carrillo back by placing his arms on her chest, but she refused to stop, the report stated. She then scratched him on his neck, chest and forearms, the report added.
When police arrived, they noticed Carrillo’s husband had visible injuries. He told police he didn’t want to press any charges, according to the report, but Carrillo was still placed under arrest.
Carrillo was first elected to Harlandale’s school board in 2013. In 2021, she was reelected to represent District 2 with 70% of the vote.
A Harlandale ISD spokesperson said Carrillo submitted her resignation “as a result of her recent arrest.” The board will discuss the next steps in accepting her resignation and filling the vacancy at its next board meeting on Jan. 10.
“This is a very unfortunate situation and the district understands the severity of the allegations,” the district said in a written statement, adding that “Harlandale ISD appreciates the community’s support as we continue to focus on student success.”
