OFFICIALS: UNRESPONSIVE INMATE DIES AT DONOVAN
A person who was imprisoned died Friday evening at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa, authorities said.
It was unclear exactly when the death occurred at the state prison, but the California Office of the Inspector General — which provides oversight of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation — tweeted that it was notified of the death about 5 p.m.
“We immediately responded to the institution to monitor the investigation into the inmate’s death,” the agency tweeted.
The Office of the Inspector General often tweets that it is monitoring death investigations at state prisons and corrections facilities.
A spokeswoman for the corrections department said there was nothing suspicious about the death, saying it was neither a homicide nor a suspected Covid-19related case.
She said an inmate at the facility who was found unresponsive died.
