University of California Television (UCTV) is making a host of videos available on its website —

“On the Bridge: The Beginnings of Contemporary Percussion Music”: Composer John Cage (below right) remarked that “percussion is revolution.” The percussion family is believed to include the oldest musical instruments aside from the human voice. In this talk, renowned conductor and virtuoso percussionist Steven Schick traces the history and applications of percussive music.
“Resilient Love in a
Time of Hate”: New Orleans native Sunni Patterson is an internationally known poetry artist and activist who has focused her music and poetry on “reaching, teaching and healing.” She emphasizes that personal and cultural understanding begins with shedding preconceptions and listening. Patterson is joined in conversation by UC Santa Barbara scholar and author George Lipsitz and by Connecticut College professor David Kyuman Kim.
