We must beat the virus before schools open

-

Re “In-person schooling is no longer realistic during pandemic” (July 10): Let’s get these escalating coronavirus infections down to a manageable level. Only then can we in good conscience reopen our schools. School is important for our children, but reopening schools too soon is not the answer. With virus levels much lower, it will be safer sending our students back to school while protecting the health of teachers as well. Open schools and the economy depend on controlling the coronavirus.

How do we get infections down? To protect others, wear masks out in public, keep social distance, avoid congregating with nonhousehold members and

avoid large group gatherings.

If we all make the effort, in a few months we can safely reopen schools. Perhaps we’ll need one more semester of using online classes with a goal of opening in January. Let’s show the nation we can come together to reach this important goal. We can do it. Laurie Fisher San Diego
