Voters should reject pay-to-play politics

Re “Gloria outpaces Bry in independent donations” (Sept. 5): Campaign consultant Tom Shepard says special interests that make large campaign contributions do so because of the “pay-to-play culture in city government. You pay money and you have special access to those you contributed to.” So special interests buy influence with their campaign contributions while our neighborhood needs go unmet. This practice is corrupt.

All San Diegans deserve to have a say in the decisions made by the city of San Diego because the city’s decisions impact all San Diegans. That’s why we need campaign finance reform. That is why we need clean elections.

Biking increase story sounds like a lot of spin

Re “San Diegans hop on cycling” (Sept. 10): Where are the numbers? This article provides ridership increases in percentages only but percentages of what? As if we needed more evidence that the president isn’t fit for the job. A person with only a modicum of foresight would’ve told us everything he knew, everything his expert advisers had told him, and that it was going to be tough, and that we had to take it seriously early on in order to minimize the consequences to the health of the public and the economy.

But no. His approach to leadership was to pretend it was nothing to get too worried about — that the virus would disappear like magic. Everyone beware. His attitude toward climate change
