Board, I agree that the board proposal to replace that and two other boards would be too broad to provide focused advice on how to meet the city's 100% renewable energy and energy independence goals.

The real problem regarding advisory boards per a 2017 audit is that more than half of the seats are vacant or expired due to lack of nominations by the mayor. Fortunately the City Council adopted procedures at the same meeting to appoint members to boards when the mayor has not acted.

These seats need to be filled so these three groups can function and participate fully in the public engagement process that council member Jennifer Campbell has now committed to in evaluating how best to address environmental issues. If you are interested in serving on one of these advisory boards, contact your City Council representative.

all that more weight.

Now, what of the companion proposition that targets homeowners? All in good time, all in good time.

Re “A Black man’s perspective of life in America in 2020” (Sept. 8): The commentary by Dwight Maxwell was excellent. Thank you for including it.

Maxwell cogently contrasted the non-violent Black Lives Matter movement with the intentionally terror-inspiring Ku Klux Klan, Proud Boys and Boogaloo Boys. His characterization of “All Lives Matter” and “Blue Lives Matter” as false narratives is right on.

The intelligence and thoughtfulness of the piece was very gratifying. Please, more of the same. Please consider inviting him to submit more of his thoughts and writing.

rug.

While his education experts define the new model for teaching history, why don't we rewrite all recorded history? Germany can skip that Hitler murdered 6 million Jews, but built a great economy and one heck of an Autobahn. Germany can also remove the nearly 20 memorials and Holocaust museums within its borders.

We preach responsibility and accountability to define our duties as individual citizens, yet our feckless leader is promoting the opposite pertaining to the portrayal of our country. America never was, nor will it be, perfect. But we can still love our country and learn from past mistakes as we strive for a more perfect union.

Story on record-low poverty was misplayed

Re “Poverty in U.S. at record low before virus roiled economy” (Sept. 16): Front page-worthy news in The San Diego Union-tribune to be celebrated irrespective of political viewpoints? Nah. Buried in the business section.

The newspaper can do a better job at presenting the news in an apolitical, evenhanded manner, but it actively chose not to. It needn't worry, it's not as if it would risk flipping California in the upcoming election.

Nation has to take this pandemic seriously

Regardless of your political preference, the war on COVID-19 is truly a war, and Americans are suffering huge losses. As I write this, COVID-19 has killed almost 200,000 Americans since the pandemic began about seven months ago.

In almost four years of World War II, more than 407,000 American service men and women died in combat.

So far, in only seven months, we have almost half the losses we suffered in all of World War II.

It is past time for all Americans, young and old, to wake up. This is a war all of us must take seriously. Otherwise, I can't imagine the final toll.

Trump’s denial of the facts hurts the GOP

Regarding Scientific American magazine endorsing a candidate for president for the first time in its 175-year history, what's more important than the health and well-being of our

planet, families, friends, co-workers and fellow man? A wall? Hats? Conspiracy theories and lies?

How can anyone, in good conscience, continue to support a man or a party that denies science and climate change?

My young daughters can't go to school or parks or even safely breathe the air outside. Nothing great about that.

Republicans can make their party great again. Vote Trump out.

How the GOP responds will be very telling

Re “Ruth Bader Ginsburg, legal giant of the Supreme Court, dies” (Sept. 18): We will now know if Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell is a moral man.

We will now know if the Republican Party has really lost its soul.
