‘NATURAL SHIFT’ TAKES SHAPE AT THE STUDIO DOOR

- MICHAEL JAMES ROCHA • U-T

What: “Natural Shift” exhibition

Tell me more: Mother Nature takes the front seat at a new collaborative exhibition called “Natural Shift” at The Studio Door gallery in Hillcrest.

The exhibit, which opened Oct. 1 and continues through Oct. 31, features the work of artists Pierre Bounaud, Sue Britt, and Vanessa and Bruce Backer. The exhibition highlights the work of artists “who make unusual shifts in thinking about natural materials to create work inspired by nature.” “From their close collaboration emerges a series of sculptures that are both thought provoking and whimsical,” according to a statement from the gallery. “The shifts experienced by each artist converge into a compelling ensemble of forms and colors inspired by the power of nature. The artwork presented in ‘Natural Shift’ is carefully curated by the artists into intimate vignettes to encourage a sense of discovery and serenity throughout the gallery space.”

Live demonstration: There have been events tied to the exhibition since it opened, and another one — a live demonstration — is scheduled for Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.

The free event will feature Bounaud, a chemist turned ceramic artist who “will demonstrate his technique on working with porcelain clay to build geometric sculptures, sharing tips and tricks he learned along the way.”

What Bounaud has to say: “The local art scene is alive, roaring back. This show ... is a collaborative exhibit of four local artists, all late bloomers who had to define their voice on their own,” Bounaud (@pbounaud on Instagram) said via email. “It was set in motion before COVID-19 hit the state hard. But we kept going and worked with The Studio Door gallery to offer San Diego some new and unusual art to enjoy.”
