VETERANS DAY
Veterans Day is Wednesday. A number of parades and ceremonies that have drawn crowds throughout the county to honor service members in past years have turned virtual this year in response to the pandemic. Here’s a lineup of some celebrations hosted by local groups. Folks can tune in to many of the events online. For drive-thru or in-person events, check the event website for COVID safety measures and event updates.
CAMP PENDLETON
Virtual Marine Corps Birthday Pageant: In honor of Veterans Day and the Marine Corps 245th Birthday, Camp Pendleton will host a largely virtual cake-cutting ceremony and Marine Corps Birthday Pageant from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. After the event, a recording will be posted at facebook.com/mciwpendletonca.
CARLSBAD
Veterans Day Military Review: The Army and Navy Academy Cadets and the Rotary Club of Carlsbad will present a virtual Veterans Day Military Review from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the academy’s stadium for the public to view online. The guest speaker is Rep. Mike Levin, whose 49th Congressional District includes Carlsbad. Highlights include march of the Colors, fly-over salute and presentation of command along with inspection of corps of cadets, presentation of the wreath, taps and Missing Man Formation Flyover. Veterans Day Ceremony: The 14th annual Veterans Day Ceremony hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1513 is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Wall of Courage in Grape Day Park. Bring chairs; limited seating is available. San Diego County COVID-19 health measures will be in force. The city of Escondido has approved the event barring the county going into the “purple” tier. VFW Post 1513 will livestream the event on Facebook and Instagram (@vfwpost1513).

Virtual Veterans Day ceremony: The Poway Veterans Park will celebrate its 10-year anniversary while honoring all U.S. veterans in a virtual celebration at 11 a.m. Wednesday on the city’s Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofpoway.
RANCHO BERNARDO
Veterans Day message: The Rancho Bernardo Veterans Memorial Association will not have a Veterans Day ceremony this year but will post a Veterans Day message on its website along with information on its “Patriots Walk” plaque program for families to honor their veterans. Visit rbvma.org.

Virtual San Diego Veterans Day Ceremony & Celebration: 34th annual event at 10 a.m. Wednesday streamed from the Veterans Museum. This year’s theme is “Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of World War II Victories.” The virtual ceremony will include appearances by favorites from the past eight years of the parades and celebrations. Ceremony livestreamed from Mt. Soledad: A Veterans Day ceremony will be livestreamed from Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial from 11 a.m. to noon Nov. 15, which was rescheduled from today due to the weather. The virtual celebration will recognize the 75th anniversary of the official ending of World War II in 1945. No spectators will be allowed on-site because of COVID restrictions. Online presentation: Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation hosts a 20-minute online presentation commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and honoring the U.S. Merchant Marine contributions toward victory. The guest speaker is Rear Adm. Jack Buono, superintendent, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. No live service at Miramar National Cemetery this year. The presentation is at miramarcemetery.org.
Veterans Day Boat Parade: The Fleet Week Veterans Day Boat Parade starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday, from Shelter Island and will pass Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, the USS Midway and Seaport Village. Highlights include vintage plane flyovers, live Coast Guard demos and other patriotic activities. The event will be livestreamed at fleetweeksandiego.org.
Documentary pays tribute to female patriots: A free Veterans Day online screening of the documentary “Unsung Heroes: The Story of America’s Female Patriots” will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, hosted by local nonprofit Foundation for Women Warriors. Register at bit.ly/34wgzmk.
Veterans Day events on USS Midway: The Fleet Week San Diego Veterans Day Boat Parade can be viewed from the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and is expected to pass by the Midway at noon. Tickets to the Midway can be purchased at midway.org or at the museum’s ticket booth. Free admission to the Midway on Wednesday for active-duty military and veterans and up to two additional family members with current military ID or proof of service presented at the Midway’s ticket booth, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Other Veterans Day events at the Midway include two aerial skydive demonstrations to the flight deck by the Leap Frogs, the U.S. Navy’s parachute team; a patriotic art exhibit on the hangar deck; and a special episode of “Destination Midway” — a livestreamed webcast presentation by the ship’s historian at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday (midway.org/destination-midway). The San Diego Blood Bank trailer will be on Navy Pier for donations Wednesday. Donors will receive one free ticket to the Midway while supplies last. Visit midway.org.
Drive-thru Parade of Honor: Honor Flight San Diego hosts a socially distanced, no-contact drive-thru Parade of Honor for veterans of all eras from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at National University in the parking lot, 9388 Lightwave Ave. Veterans will drive through lanes of well-wishers and at the end of the route, they will receive a care package, that will be placed in their trunk thanks to Honor Flight SD and Operation Gratitude, while supplies last (1,000 packages planned).
