Theresa Hebets

SAN DIEGO — Theresa Mathilda Beresh Schlanger Hebets, 87, of San Diego, California, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2020. She was born June 4, 1933 in Hemlock, Ohio. Theresa is the youngest of 12 children to the late Peter and Margaret (Gerenyi) Beresh. She and her siblings were first generation Hungarians. Nine siblings preceded her in death: Brothers: John, Peter, Alex. Sisters: Anne, Margaret, Helen, Rose, Bernadine, and Patricia. Theresa is survived by her two sisters: Elizabeth and Cornelia. Theresa is also survived by her 6 children: Yvonne Schlanger Brinkman (Louis); William R. Schlanger (Christy); Mary Schlanger Stroney; Bernadette R. Mccualsky (Kim); John F. Schlanger (Rebecca); and Edward D. Schlanger (Elvira); seven grandchildren, Vanessa, Louis “Skip”, Brett, Cameron, Maggie (Ben), Connor, and Elvin: 3 great grandchildren, Aurora, Bernadette, Berkley and sixty-one nephews and nieces. Theresa was preceded in death by William R. Schlanger Sr., father to her children and her second husband, Edward “Jim” Hebets, and his two sons Stephen and Bruce. His 3 children survive her: James, Kathryn, and Richard, including 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Theresa attended Congo Elementary and was a 1950 Corning High School graduate. While in high school, Theresa studied piano and trombone, she was prom queen and graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class. Theresa was an executive secretary for North American Aviation/ Rockwell International for 20 years. At that time,

she was a trombonist in the North American Aviation Concert Band and played in a German Brass Quintet. In addition, she was an accomplished pianist. Theresa was a woman of faith and had a deep devotion to Jesus’ Blessed Mother. She instilled in her children a strong Catholic faith and education. She was a member of the St. Philip’s the Apostle Parish’s, Alter and Rosary Society and her family was one of the original parishioners and she was the first organist for Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, both in Columbus, Ohio. She was a longtime member of St. Therese Parish in San Diego during her marriage to Jim Hebets. She was a patron of the San Diego Opera and a 35 year season ticket holder of the San Diego Chargers NFL team and was a member of the National Rifle Association. She enjoyed traveling here and abroad. She was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, especially the OSU marching band, as well as the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Browns. Theresa was a voracious reader of mysteries, westerns and crime books. Above all, Theresa was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who wanted her children to succeed, be happy, and to continue to be faithful to God.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 5, by the Reverend Father Patrick Sloneker at 10AM at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel, 6440, South High Street, Lockbourne, Ohio on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Cemetery where burial will follow among her family. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
